    As Deutschösterreich sought to assert its German identity and promote pan-Germanism, the Verband “Deutsche Wehr” emerged and grew. Founded in 1921 through the amalgamation of the Freikorps “Ostmark” and the Deutscher Wehrturnerverband. This Wehrverband aimed to strengthen Austria’s German identity and advocate for unification with the German Reich, while fostering a spirit of defense, nationalism and antisemitism. The Verband “Deutsche Wehr” was outspoken National-Socialist.
