Deutscher Tag in Nürnberg 1923 – The Rehearsal

The Deutscher Tag, or “German Day”, 1 – 2 September 1923 in Nürnberg was formally proclaimed as a commemoration of the Battle of Sedan (1/2 September 1870) and the victory at Tannenberg (17 August – 2 September 1914), the event became both a massive military parade, and political rally with over 100,000 participants from most of the patriotic and Völkisch organizations in Bavaria. The event also served as a role model for the National Socialists and their later Reichparteitag Rallies in Nürnberg. While the founding of the Deutscher Kampfbund is considered the most important political result of the event.

In the spring and summer of 1923, Deutscher Tag events had already been celebrated in various places in Franconia. The model was the Deutscher Tag in Coburg held in October 1922, which was organized by the Deutschvölkischer Schutz- und Trutzbund. In 1923, similar patriotic events took place in a number of German towns and cities. They were characterized by massive parades of the paramilitary associations and inflammatory speeches.…
