Völkisch-nationalist event with around 5,000 participants on September 30, 1923. There was an extensive meeting between Adolf Hitler, Richard Wagner’s family and his son-in-law, Houston Stewart Chamberlain.
From the fall of 1922, several “German Days” were held in Franconia as events organized by völkisch nationalist circles. After Coburg, 1922, Nürnberg, 1-2 September 1923 and Hof, 16 September 1923, Bayreuth followed on 30 September 1923 as the venue. As the local Bayreuther Tagblatt emphasized on September 28, the organizers wanted to “show all non-German elements that the time is over when one could not admit that one had a German sense in one’s heart and German blood in German veins.” After the arrival of around 5,000 participants, a protestant field service followed by the consecration of the standard took place in front of numerous spectators on the morning of September 30th. In the afternoon, a parade was held to commemorate the fallen of World War I. After the concluding parades in front of the New Castle, several representatives of nationalist groups, including Adolf Hitler, held one of his speeches in the former margravial riding hall. After his speech, Hitler visited Richard Wagner’s son-in-law, the writer Houston Stewart Chamberlain.
