In November 1923, the party alongside their SA and other affiliated paramilitaries attempted to perform a putsch in München. This led to a nation-wide ban on all organizations involved in the putsch attempt, with many of the leaders, including Adolf Hitler, being behind bars.
The party was officially abolished from 9 November until early 1925 when the party ban was lifted. The former members of the NSDAP joined mainly two parties, the Grossdeutscher Volksgemeinschaft (GVG), which was the only party that was still loyal to Adolf Hitler, it operated mainly in southern Germany and was initially led by Alfred Rosenberg.
