Josef Fuess, the creator of the first party badge

Most good stories start with a badge. And this story is no exception to that. My interest in Josef Fuess, the man behind the very first NSDAP enamel started a few years ago when I was able to obtain an rather interesting SA badge made in silver. Together with the badge came a digitally scanned archive photograph depicting an identical twin SA badge and some other interesting badges, among them the very first Deutsche Arbeiterpartei badges.

Josef Fuess was born in Pforzheim in the province of Baden-Württemberg, after finishing school he attended the goldsmith school in his native city of Pforzheim. After finishing the goldsmiths school, he did his so called travel years as a goldsmith apprentice, traveling as far as Ghent, Belgium. Working in several workshops before opening his own in 1910 at Blümenstraße 5 in München.…
